The Native Horse Of The Northern Plains is Coming to Texas!

The Nokota horse descends from the last surviving population of wild horses in North Dakota. For at least a century, the horses inhabited the rugged Little Missouri badlands, located in the southwestern corner of the North Dakota. When Theodore Roosevelt National Park was created in the 1950s, some of the wild bands were fenced in, an accident that proved to have far-reaching consequences. While the raising of federal fences provided the horses with a measure of protection, the National Park Service (NPS) does not allow wild or feral equines, and is exempt from related protective legislation. Consequently, the park spent decades attempting to remove all of the horses. During the 1980s, Frank and Leo Kuntz began purchasing horses after N.P.S. round-ups, named them “Nokotas,” and started to create a breed registry. Learn more go to www.nokotahorse.org

The Nokota Horses are coming directly from their winter pastures in North Dakota. All the horses are for sale, if you are interested in purchasing a horse. Here is your chance to work with Jack. What a great way to get to know your new horse! We also want to encourage those of you who don’t want to buy a horse that you can still participate in learning how to work with the Nokota’s. This clinic is for those of you who want to have a better understanding of why horses respond the way they do. You will learn how to take an unhandled horse and get him to respond positively to the things you are asking. You don’t have to be a” colt starter” to do this clinic.  Each person and horse will be brought along at their own speed.

The horses will be young, yearlings up to four years olds. You will get to work with horses that haven’t had much human contact. Most of the horses have not been haltered. Each participant will be assigned a horse. Jack will help you work with the horse on an individual basis. You will be exposed to a lot of different horses and issues. If you have been looking for help in these areas of your horsemanship this class is for you. If you would like to work with the horses from the ground but are unsure about taking the first ride you are still allowed to participate. The class size will be a maximum of 10 participants.

Things that we will cover

Building confidence in the horses and getting them to accept human contact. Haltering, Teaching the horse to lead by following a feel. Ground Work: Learn how to move the horse’s feet from the ground through pressure and release. How to be as soft, light and polite as you can but as firm as you need to get the desired result. Work on as many of the Four Steps of Colt Starting as the horse is ready for: 1. Accepting the human. 2. Accepting the saddle. 3. Accepting the rider. 4. Accepting the bit.
